Low Cost Monitor for Welding Titanium and Stainless Steel

purgeye nano, weld puge monitor, gas analyzer, oxygen reader, ppm traceTitanium and stainless steel are both reactive alloys. When they are heated during the welding process, they will react with any air that is present, causing oxidation, which can lead to a loss of corrosion resistance properties. Shielding the metal with an inert gas is therefore crucial and one way to measure the oxygen content within the welding zone is by using a Weld Purge Monitor®.

Leading the way in Weld Purging Technology, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s PurgEye® Nano is ideal for welding titanium and high end stainless steel, where oxygen levels are required to be as low as 10 ppm.

Luke Keane, Technical Sales Manager for HFT® said: “By knowing the exact level of oxygen inside the pipe at all times, the welder knows when to start welding for high quality results. The PurgEye® Nano is our basic entry level 10 ppm Monitor, which means it is perfect for restricted budgets. It’s a simple plug and play monitor, ideal for welding titanium, stainless steel and other reactive metals such as zirconium.”

Accurately Measure the Dew Point During Purging

dew point sensor, weld purging, weld purge monitor, huntingdon fusion, HFTDuring purging welders need to measure the oxygen content but also need to measure the ‘dew point’.

The dewpoint is the temperature where condensation begins and water will condense on the material being welded. This can affect the weld properties significantly.

Georgia Gascoyne, CEO for HFT® said: “We have recently added a Dew Point Sensor to our range that can be used in conjunction with our range of 10 ppm Weld Purge Monitors®, so rather than purchasing a separate, expensive Dew Point Meter, HFT®’s Dew Point Sensor can be connected to the Weld Purge Monitor® via the PurgeNet™ lead.”

Pipe Purging Monitor

purgeye 200, weld purge monitor, oxygen reader, ppm trace, gas analyzerWhat is Weld Purging? Weld Purging is the displacement of oxygen by an inert gas (usually argon) from the vicinity of a weld, before, during and after welding. It is crucial to displace the oxygen when welding many metals to help achieve oxide free, zero colour welds with no loss of corrosion resistant properties.

What are the benefits of a Pipe Purging / Weld Purge Monitor?
• Saves money. Removing any guesswork or estimates.
• Saves time. Inert gas consumption is significantly reduced.

Pipe Purging Experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s PurgEye® 200 Weld Purge Monitor® will ensure zero colour, non-oxidised welds are achieved every time, with accurate readings down to 10 ppm.

CO2 Pipe Freezing with Qwik-Freezer™

qwik freezer, pipe freezing, free sealing, valve changingThe Pipestoppers® Division at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® provides a cost saving solution to carrying out repairs or modifications on pipes with liquid inside.

Qwik-Freezer™, the industry standard portable CO2 Pipe Freezing System requires little set-up time and is the only low cost CO2 Pipe Freezing System capable of making ice plugs in pipes up to 8” (200 mm) diameter.

Qwik-Freezer™ kit is easy to use. A specially designed jacket is wrapped around the pipe at the point where the freeze is required. A nozzle on the jacket is then coupled to a cylinder of liquid CO2 by means of a high-pressure hose. When the liquid CO2 is injected into the space between the Qwik-Freezer™ jacket and pipe, it immediately expands to form a solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) at a temperature of -78ºC (-109ºF). This low temperature quickly freezes the contents forming a secure “ice plug” which seals the pipe.

Weld Purge Film for a Variety of Pipe Sizes

Weld Purge Film, water soluble film. weld purging, purge and weld, back purgingLow cost weld purging a variety of tubes and pipes sizes can be achieved by the use of low cost Weld Purge Film®.

Weld Purging Experts, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® recommend switching home made dams produced of unsuitable material, to their low cost Weld Purge Film® to achieve oxide free, zero colour welds.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “Weld Purging can be challenging as well as expensive, which is why many welders today continue to construct their own dams to cut costs. Homemade dams made from material such as foam, sponge or paper can often lead to loss of welds when they leak or slip from position thus flooding the welding zone with air.”

Weld Purging of Heat-Treated Pipework

hotpurge, welding Chromium-molybdenum (chromoly), weld purging, pre heat welding, post weld heat treatment

Some high strength steels need to be pre-heated prior to welding and may also require a post-weld heat-treatment.

Both pre- and post- weld heat treatment is necessary to prevent cracking, but temperatures up to 300ºC (572ºF) must be maintained for lengthy periods. To prevent oxidation, the inside of piping needs to be purged continuously using a specialised pipe weld purging system.

HotPurge® has been developed by International Weld Purging Specialists Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®. It is an Inflatable Pipe Purging System for use with High Strength Steel Pipe Joints where pre-and post-weld heating temperatures might be as high as 300ºC (572ºF) for lengthy periods.

Manufactured in sizes 6 to 88” (150 to 2,235 mm), HotPurge® Systems can be used repeatedly for weld purging and can keep the oxygen levels below 100 parts per million (ppm) throughout the welding cycle, ensuring oxidation-free welds, without the metallurgical imperfections caused due to rapid heating and cooling.
