Weld Trailing Shields ® for Bright, Shiny, Tube, Pipe and Flat Sheet Welds

Weld Trailing Shields for extended inert gas coverage when welding metals such as stainless steel, titanium, zirconium, nickel alloys etc, Weld Purging Specialists Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® manufacture a range of Weld Trailing Shields®.

The shield gas from torch cup leaves the metal usually before it has cooled below its oxidation point, discolouration because of oxidation forms behind the weld. This oxidation may need to be removed in some cases to avoid metallurgical defects forming in the heat-affected zone.

The Trailing Shield® ensures the weld stays under a protective argon gas coverage, while the hot metal is cooling, meaning it doesn’t oxidise on contact with air.

For tube and pipe welding, the Weld Trailing Shields ® are available in curved format from 1”, right up to 80” (25 mm – 2,000 mm) ø. These curved models are available in both OD and ID versions for internal or external tube and pipe welding.

These lightweight Trailing Shields are also available in flat format for sheet welding. For mechanised welding, our Weld Trailing Shields ® are manufactured in longer and wider dimensions which the welding machine can hold and these dimensions cater for the faster welding speeds of automatic machines.

Designed for any brand of TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW) or Plasma (PAW) manual or machine mounted welding torches, welding with Weld Trailing Shields® will:

  • Reduce gas consumption.
  • Save re-work.
  • Eliminate wasted material costs and rejected welds due to oxidation.
  • Prevent the necessity to remove the oxide, thus saving manual labour costs and cleaning times and materials.

By using a Trailing Shield®, welds will be left shiny, with no discolouration even when welding at faster speeds.

When connected to the welding torch, Trailing Shields® are very easily attached to the gas supply. The gas is then distributed evenly into the body of each shield. Silicone rubber side shields provide a barrier to prevent the gas escaping, ensuring it remains over the weld. The side shields are heat resistant up to 300ºC.

A video is available on YouTube by Travis Field, showing our Trailing Shield® in action.
