The Blacks extended their unbeaten run this week in division 3 West B with a convincing 41 - 16 bonus point win against visiting Betws, to remain top of the league. With other results going in favour of Burry Port, notably Tumble beating Lampeter and Penybanc beating Llangadog, it has given the Blacks a 5 point lead over second place Tumble with a game in hand.
The Blacks started well, created many line breaks, disappointingly Luke Rudall had a try disallowed due to the ref being unsighted from the halfway line. Despite this frustration, Burry Port were awarded two penalties from a scrambling Betws defence with Ben Williams slotting both over from close range to create a 6 - 0 lead. Betws, who have beaten Tumble this season, held onto the ball and frustrated Burry Port who were keen to play an expansive game.
With two infringements Betws 10 Dan Griffiths slotted both attempts to draw level, but it was a solid scrum that put pressure on Betws and the Blacked showed good composure to march up-field and Richard Parker scored from a catch and drive with Williams converting. The Blacks continued to play an exciting, high tempo game and with a creaking Betws defence, Ben Williams exploited a gap to race away to score under the posts and promptly added the conversion.
Half Time 20 - 6.
The second half saw the Blacks go through the gears with good interplay between backs and forwards and marshalled well at 10 by Stef Powell, good support play and hard running saw Mathew Gower hit a lovely angle and crash over for a good try. Williams converted.
With Burry Port on top, there were more line breaks and Steff Roberts gathered an intelligent grubber to go under the posts with Williams improving. Captain Dan Etteridge completed with the try, scoring close to the posts with Williams slotting over the conversion leaving him with a 100% return from his boot.
To their credit Betws bounced back towards the end of the game scoring two late tries, with one being a fine try by live-wire Centre G Lewis.
Full Time 41 - 16.
