BURRY PORT RFC GO TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

On a dry but overcast day, Burry Port travelled to local rivals Trimsaran for a top of the league clash in division 3 west B. Trimsaran were well organised in defence and were a challenge at set-piece, however the Blacks came away with an away win and managed to stop Trimsaran scoring any points at their own ground.

The game was played in front of a big crowd and was often a scrappy encounter but an away win was a fair result. The Blacks dominated the early exchanges and with the forwards securing good ball and territory for the backs, Trimsaran were scrambling to contain the Blacks and eventually the pressure in the first half resulted in two penalties for scrum half Ben Williams. Trimsaran came back into the game and came close to scoring a try through centre Tom Bonnell, but the Blacks defence stood firm and thwarted a good effort on the try line.

Half time - Trimsaran 0, Burry Port 6.

The second half saw Burry Port exert more pressure and a sustained period of possession saw another 3 points to extend the lead to 9 points to nil. It was becoming obvious as the game went on that the Blacks were creating more chances and the crowd cheered when live-wire hooker Iwan Roberts surged up-field showing a good side-step along that way.

It was fitting that as the game opened up it was his brother and centre Steff Roberts who finished off a fine move that demonstrated high skill levels from both backs and forwards. The game continued in this way with many chances being created and the Blacks securing good field position for number 8 Llyr Sims to power over from close range for a well taken try.

This away win, the third away win of the season, ensured that the Blacks climbed to the top of the table in a game that did not see the players hit top form. Trimsaran proved difficult opponents and are not near the top of the division by accident, but the Blacks showed increasing maturity in closing out a game that would have eluded them last season.

In summary, it was a good away win for a young and improving Burry Port team, captained superbly by Dan Etheridge, that contained 5 players from the youth team.

Final score - Trimsaran 0, Burry Port 19.

Burry Port are now three points clear at the top of the league!
