We were welding stainless steel lines that carried liquefied paper pulp.
Having smooth surfaces inside the pipe was critical as you definitely did NOT want grapes snagging the stock out of the stream.
When the original clump gets snagged, it collects more until it falls into the stream and comes out as a defect in the sheet of paper.
It goes back to the old saying, "You can pay me now or you can pay me later!'."
