Match Report
There was huge anticipation at the Memorial Park as the start of the 2017/18 began with Burry Port hosting Penygroes. The early games bring a great unknown and it will take a few rounds to establish the form teams in the division. The past few seasons have seen a very competitive division with all teams capable of beating each other. Penygroes entered the league after re-forming this season, and their first game of the season couldn't have been any tougher. The early exchanges were competitive but Penygroes couldn't match Burry Port’s power and pace and the hosts grabbed a 4 try bonus point on 30 minutes and continued to play attractive rugby as the match developed.
As in the earlier pre-season friendly against New Dock Stars, the Burry Port team played with adventure and have developed an attractive style of open running rugby and to their credit remained focused as the visitors lost their shape in defence. However a consolation try was good reward for Penygroes who showed heart and they will hope to learn from this match despite it being so one sided. The Blacks scored 85 points and in the opening weekend jumped to the top of the Division 3 West B table. There will be tougher matches ahead this season starting with a tricky match next Saturday away to Trimsaran. One thing is for sure, it promises to be another exciting season so do your bit and get behind the boys at home & away matches. C'Mon the Blacks.
Coaches Gareth Gravell and Cieron Thomas were pleased with the attacking intent shown by the players and how they managed to put into practice some of the hard work from over the summer onto the field. Also they both would have been impressed by performances from Sam Reeve and youth team captain Oli Davies both making their 1st team debuts.
